The ongoing world-wide concern for the spread of coronations is fueling myths and panic and mixed in there somewhere are relevant facts that we should all be aware of as we navigate this environment.  We don’t want to go into the details of what is already out there such as frequently washing hands, the elderly & health compromised individuals need to stay away from crowds and infected folks for a few weeks and limiting exposure to events and large gatherings.  Instead we would like to examine the facts around the following:

HOW LONG DOES THE CORONAVIRUS STAY ON MY CELL/SMART PHONE?  HOW DO I CLEAN THE DEVICE?

If you are extremely diligent and follow all of the rules of hand-washing, crowd avoidance and general health safeguard recommendations this will be useless if you don’t clean your smart phone which you probably carry and hold constantly.  In general, here are some of the facts around the estimated surface survival rates for the coronavirus from the CDC, WHO and other healthcare organizations:

  • Recent tests found that viable virus could be detected up to three hours later in the air, up to four hours on copper, up to 24 hours on cardboard and up to two to three days on plastic and stainless steel.
  • According to Julie Fischer of Georgetown University “What we need to be doing is washing our hands, being aware that people who are infected may be contaminating surfaces,” and keeping hands away from the face, she said.

This means that those who are in contact with someone infected or a surface that has been contaminated will by sure transfer, contaminate their phone device surfaces.  Even if you wash your hands frequently and not clean your phone, you will just re-contaminate your hands and therefore increase the chances that you give yourself the virus.
